The Agriculture In-Service Training & Communication Centre (AITCC), as the Headquarters of the Extension Service in Guyana, is specifically charged with providing a substantive linkage between local and international research agencies and local farmers. They also provide technical training programmes and the publication and dissemination of educational information to farmers and technicians in each of the regions.

The Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Guyana provides training to the degree level in agriculture science, and is one of the three institutions concerned with the training of technicians in the agricultural sector.

The Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) is a statutory body that, in addition to providing overall policy direction, provides research, extension, quality control and market facilitation services to the rice industry.

The GRDB also produces regular statistics on production and marketing of rice.

GUYSUCO  

The sugar industry is operated principally by GUYSUCO, a single state-owned corporation, on a fully commercial basis.

Hydromet's mission is to observe, archive and understand Guyanese weather and climate and provide meteorological, hydrological and oceanographic services in support of Guyana's national needs and international obligations.  Hydromet's activities include monitoring, research, provision of services and coordination of Guyana's involvement in various regional and international conventions.

The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) institutionalizes a hemispheric-wide system of technical and financial support in the fields of Trade and Investment, Science, Technology and Natural Resources, Agricultural Health and Rural Development. IICA also provides wide international technical support in training, education, communications, information, documentation and informatics.

The Lands and Surveys department is legally charged with the responsibility of managing all state-owned lands, and specifically for making such lands available to the farming community of a lease-hold or free-hold basis, according to policy.  It is also a repository of a wealth of geographical and cadastral data.  The department is shortly to be converted to a semi-autonomous agency.

The Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) and the Ministry of Fisheries, Crops & Livestock (MFCL), are the two principal governmental agencies charged with the responsibility of promoting agricultural development in Guyana.  

The MOA also coordinates the activities of several departments and semi-autonomous bodies covering the the major export crops (sugar and rice) and including land administration, research drainage and irrigation and hydrometeorology.

The Ministry of Fisheries, Crops & Livestock (MFCL) and the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) are the two principal governmental agencies charged with the responsibility of promoting agricultural development in Guyana.  The MFCL also has a responsibility for the Forestry sector, with the associated implementing agency being the semi-autonomous Forestry Commission.

The activities of the MFCL are separated into two operating units: Fisheries and Crops & Livestock.

The Fisheries Department is responsible for the management, regulation, promotion and sustainable development of Guyana’s fishery resources. Their mandate covers both marine and inland resources.  The unit conducts research and extension activities and produces comprehensive statistics. 

Crops & Livestock are responsible for the provision of extension services including the production of both crops and livestock as well as agricultural health activities for both plants and animals.

The National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) operates as the principal agricultural research agency in Guyana responsible for increasing the productivity of crops and livestock for national self-sufficiency and export. The research projects support plant protection, biotechnology, soil microbiology, soil and plant analysis.

The National Dairy Development Programme (NDDP) was established on March 1st, 1984 to undertake the catalyst role in promoting the development of the cattle industry with the objectives of i) attaining self-sufficiency in local milk production and ii) increasing beef production to go beyond our present self-sufficiency and develop and export market within CARICOM in the first instance.

The National Drainage and Irrigation Board (NDIB) deals with all public matters pertaining to management, improvement, extension and provision of drainage, irrigation and flood control infrastructure and services in declared areas of the country.

The "New" Guyana Marketing Corporation (NGMC) is charged with providing market facilitation services to the private sector for the export of non-traditional agricultural produce which include facilitating local market development, developing and disseminating post-harvest technology and providing appropriate market research.
