Description
The course aims to provide the livestock
industry with people who have a broad knowledge of the technical,
physical and economic aspects of all major domesticated species.
It includes selection, breeding, nutrition, reproduction, growth
and management in the production of meat, milk and eggs.
Students learn a wide range of skills in
livestock production and management including General Management,
Computer Science, Livestock Production Planning and Wildlife
Management. They develop their communication skills and
also undertake practical training either at REPAHA or in the
community. During this period, students knowledge, skills
and suitability for industry are assessed by livestock production
specialists and livestock personnel.

Careers
Graduates can find employment with
Governments and other industries as Livestock Producers, Farm
Managers, Extension Agents, Research Technicians and Agriculture
Science Teachers. Graduates are also qualified for careers
in agri-business with feed supply companies or other related
fields.

In order
to develop an appreciation for the fact that the Animal Sciences
are a 24 x 7 x 52 activity, students are divided into groups and
rotated on a weekly basis among the different areas which include
cattle, sheep, rabbits, goat, guinea pigs, poultry production,
pasture establishment, pasture maintenance, clinics and
laboratory.
Farm
practice is done from 6:00 to 7:00 am. Attendance at farm
practice is mandatory.
A passing
grade of at least 75% is necessary
for graduation.
Field Training and Livestock Extension
Cycles
"Introduction to Field
Training Cycle"
After
final examinations for the academic year, first year students are
required to participate in the
programme, Introduction
to Field Training Cycle. This consists of
introductory visits to facilities and locations that will be
visited during the field Training cycle of the second year.
Attendance is mandatory.
The Introduction to Field
Training Cycle consists of two-week (approximately) rotation per
term in each of the following topic areas:

Veterinary Public Health (municipal abattoir, processing plant,
etc)
-
Ambulatory
-
Herd Health
-
Laboratory practice
-
In-Company Projects
(NDDP, GUYSUCO, Bounty Farm)
The cycles are completely practical with no formal lectures.
They have a value of four (4) units per term.

REPAHA intends to develop courses to be utilized by the
distance mode, after recognizing that farmers and technicians around the
Caribbean would like to study but due to personal commitments cannot attend the
REPAHA institution.
One such course that will be available very soon after
it is finalized is the Certificate course in Broiler Production.
