General

Academic matters are under the preview of the Academic Committee, which comprises the Principal and Senior Lecturers.  An Academic Adviser will be assigned to each student to provide guidance and counseling throughout the student’s tenure at the institution.

Academic Regulations

The institution reserves the right to change any provision listed in these Regulations with due notice to students.

Attendance is compulsory at all lectures and laboratory periods unless prior permission to be absent is given.

Students who are absent from classes due to illness must report such illness to the institution within 24 hours of the missed class. The institute reserves the right to demand a medical certificate.

Performance in all individual subjects will be recorded on a scale of 0 – 100 and will be interpreted as:

PASS 50-100%
FAIL Below 50%

Performance in overall average for each term will be recorded on a scale of 0 – 100 and will be interpreted as:

PASS 50-100%
FAIL Below 50%

A student is required to obtain a pass in every subject in order to proceed to the following term, the only exception is in the First year where a student may fail two (2) subjects, but must obtain a term’s average of 55% or higher.

Preparatory Cycle (First Year)

If the student fails three (3) subjects and still attains a term’s average of 55% or higher, the student will be required to write a supplemental examination in one of the failed subjects and this will be decided by the Academic Committee.

However, if the student fails two (2) or more subjects and does not attain a term’s average of 55%, that student will be required to withdraw for REPAHA at the end of the First year, or repeat the entire First Year.

Conditions for Academic Standing

(a)      General

  1. The Institute may cancel the registration of students whose work or record of attendance at lectures or laboratory periods is unsatisfactory.

  2. A student may not repeat work of any year or part thereof more than once.

  3. An overall failing grade in the Field Training Cycle and Farm Practice may result in a student not being recommended for the Diploma.

(b)      Requirements for Graduation

  1. Student must attend at least 90% of all lectures and laboratory periods each academic year in order to be eligible for graduation at the end of the two-year period. The Academic Committee would give exceptional circumstances.

  2. Students who, owing to unforeseen circumstances, find themselves unable to attend lectures during the year should notify the lecturer through the student’s Academic Adviser as soon as possible.

Lecturers may seek the authorization of the Academic Committee to debar students from taking examinations in a course if they have not fulfilled the course requirements during the term.

  1. A cumulative average on a scale 0–100 will determine standing at graduation. These grades may be interpreted as follows:

Distinction Students who proceed normally from term to term and who have obtained a cumulative of 80% and above.
Credit Students who proceed normally from term to term and whose cumulative average is between 70% and 79%.
Pass Students who proceed normally from term to term and whose cumulative average is between 50% and 69%.
Fail Students with a cumulative average of less than 50%.
  1. Where a student fails to complete the requirements for graduation, the student may be allowed to do so the following year, under special circumstances.

(c)      Advanced Standing

Advanced standing is defined as course exemption awarded upon recommendation of the division head by virtue of previous acceptable experience.

Applicants who hold qualifications from a recognized institution, additional to the minimum entry requirements for a programme may apply for advanced standing. Such students may be given credit for part of their courses in certain programmes, but credits so awarded will not be calculated into the students’ units average.

Application for advanced standing may be made to the office of the principal with appropriate transcripts at the time of registration.  If advanced standing is granted by the Academic Committee, the Principal, in consultation with the Academic Committee, will designate the courses from which exemption is granted and the number of units allowed for such standing.

(i)      Advanced Warning

A student will receive an Academic Warning at the end of the term when the student fails more than one course, or if the student’s average falls below 50%.

(ii)      Advanced Probation

A student will be placed on Academic Probation if the student’s Term Average is less the 50% for two consecutive terms or if the student fails two courses.

(iii)      Advanced Dismissal

A student may be required to withdraw from the program if the student has a term average of less than 50% for three consecutive terms or if the student fails three or more courses

(iv)      Failure

A student who fails a course will be permitted to repeat the course twice only.  The passing grade of 50% and credits earned will be included in the student’s cumulative average.

In special circumstances a student may be granted leave of absence for a period not exceeding one year.  Each case will be considered on its own merit.

  1. Examinations are held periodically to provide continuous assessment. Students will be examined in practical and theoretical aspects of the programme.

  2. Examinations will be either written, practical, oral and/or a combination of these

  3. No single examination would be weighted more than 50% of the final grade for each subject, in each term.

  4. Approval for absence from an examination will be given only for illness or compassionate reasons.  In the former case, a medical certificate is required and in the latter prior permission of the Principal and Lecturer must be obtained. Suitable arrangements will be made by the Principal and lecturer for the student to take the examination at a future date.

Any student who is caught cheating will receive ZERO for the exam in which he/she cheated.  The student will not be allowed to graduate with honours and, if caught cheating again, he/she will be expelled from the institution.

A student who fails to attain an average of 50% in any course or 75% in farm practical, will be required to do a supplemental exam.

A student will not be allowed to write more than two (2) supplemental examinations per term. A written notice will be sent to the student who must write the supplemental exam, within on (1) month of the failed subject(s).  This applies to any student who has failed in one (1) or at the most two (2) subjects, providing the student has obtained an average of at least 55% or higher of the total marks of the term.

Before entering the final term of the final year, a student must be in good standing in all subjects of the previous terms.

At the end of Year 2, there will be a Comprehensive Final Examination utilizing at least one (1) External Examiner in each core subject area.  This examination will not contribute to your academic units, but students must pass this examination with a grade of ‘C’ or better to graduate.  The comprehensive final is composed of both theoretical and practical examinations.

The structure of the comprehensive final examination is outlined below:

Animal Health & Veterinary Public Health

Practical Theory

TOTAL 50 50

Livestock Production & Management

Grading

All courses will be assessed using the Unit System.  Each lecture hour or each Laboratory practical session of 2-3 hours, will be considered as one unit for the purpose of grading.  If the student receives a grade of 75% for the course, he would then receive 75% x 5 or 3.75 units.

The cumulative grade would then be figured by the percentage of total possible units attainable. For example:

Student "Jones" Course Units Earned Units
Course A – 85% 3 (85 x 3) = 2.55
Course B -  75% 5 (75 x 5) = 3.75
Total 8 6.30

Cumulative Grade = 6.3/8 x 100 = 73.75%

The overalls, weather boots and lab coats will become the student’s property at the end of the programme but all helmets must be returned.
