General

 

REPAHA assumes that students are responsible for their conduct, their participation in the educational opportunities of the institute, and the control of their private lives within the context of these regulations.  Institutional policies, regulations, procedures, program and services reflect this attitude and philosophy.  REPAHA provides services and programmes that will help students adjust to, understand, evaluate and utilize available academic resources; plan, prepare for, and pursue their life work; learn to know; live with; appreciate and enjoy others in harmony and with fulfillment and mutual respect; and maintain mental and physical health and strength as they integrate persona, professional and social values.  


Student Stipend

Students will be given a monthly out of pocket allowance payable on the last Thursday of each month, for the ten (10) months of the academic year, in an amount designated by their sponsoring agencies.

Residential Life

 

General

REPAHA offers two (2) year residential courses.  Dormitory accommodation is provided on campus for students.  However, no accommodation is provided for the spouses of students.

Students are subject, at all times, to the rules and regulations of the institution.  The Principal is the final authority on the interpretation of these duties.

The regulations and conditions governing student life on campus are outlined in Rules and Regulations.

Briefly, these rules strive to protect the rights of each student and request each student to:

  1. Keep the surroundings clean, sanitary and orderly

  2. Prevent wanton damage and unnecessary defacing to property

  3. Be considerate of each other’s rights and protect students’ lives from hazard caused by recklessness.

     


Campus Facilities

 

The Programme provides:

  1. A restricted area for of High Voltage Thermal-oriented appliances in the kitchenette and Laundry area.

  2. A library for students to pursue researches and studies, etc.

  3. A lounge to entertain visitors and guests, and

  4. A cafeteria for meals  


Telephone

Students are allowed to make local and collect telephones calls only.  A student may be allowed to make non-collect international calls with the permission of the Principal or Finance & Administration Officer.  


Library

REPAHA has a library on campus with several thousand of volumes.  Arrangements would be made for students to use the library facilities of the University of Guyana, Guyana school of Agriculture and National Agricultural Research Institute.  Students must obey the rules and procedures of these respective libraries.


Transportation

Transportation is provided to and from the airport at the beginning and end of the academic year. Current policy provides for transportation to Georgetown on Saturday mornings.  Abuse of this policy may result in suspension of these travel provisions.  Transportation for all academic activities will be provided by the institution. Other tips to Georgetown must be made at the student’s expense.


Travel and Recess Policy

Passport and return air tickets may be lodged for safe keeping with the REPAHA Administration.  REPAHA will not be responsible for the loss of documents, which are not handed into the Administration.  Students wishing to return home during the recess must do so at their own expense.


Banks

Banks are opened form 8:00 hours to 2:30 hours – Monday to Thursdays and also from 08:00 hours to 12:30 hours to 17:00 hours on Fridays.

Mail to students should be addressed as follows:

Mail should be signed for and collected from the Student Services coordinator daily.

 


Medical Provision

REPAHA may require a student in any of the years of the course to undertake a medical examination or such clinical or laboratory tests as may be deemed advisable.

 


Off-Campus Leave

Students going off campus are required to sign-out on evenings and weekends, stating time out and intended destination, and to sign in on return.

All students are encouraged to participate in all aspects of social and extra curricular activities. These activities cover:


Sports

Recreation at REPAHA involve mainly cricket, soccer, volleyball, athletics and indoor games. There is a healthy and lively competition existing between REPAHA and the Guyana School of Agriculture. It is also planned that this series would be widened to include the University of Guyana, Cyril Potter College of Education and possibly the Guyana Technical Institute and Critchlow Labour College.


Art and Culture

In an effort to promote rounded professionals, the program encourages all forms of expression that develop the arts of speech, debates, drama, poetry, music and craft. Concerts and classes in public speaking are actively supported by the Institute.


Entertainment

The Student Union is responsible for the general planning of all outings, parties and excursions. The Administration provides two tours per academic year – one for each class – to places of interest in Guyana. As a form of pastime, the Program provides a television set and videocassette recorder to keep students updated with world events.


Religion

The Students Union is responsible for making arrangements for all religious services and inter-denominational activities required on campus. This institute fully supports such activities and will cooperate as far as possible to ensure that religious accommodation and peculiarities are satisfied.

Student Union

The Student Union is an association of the student body of the institute. Every registered student of REPAHA is a member of the student body. The aims of the association are:

  1. to further the educational and social purposes of the institute;

  2. to advance and promote unity and fraternity among the students and staff; and

  3. to stimulate artistic, creative, athletic and sporting talents of the students.


Student Executive

The routine of student activities is enhanced by their active involvement in aspects of the administration of the programme. To effectively co-ordinate all plans, to clearly and timely communicate all concerns and to articulate all grievances and resolve problems, a Student Executive is elected within the first month of the academic year. The executive comprises a Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer and three other members.

General

Students are expected to conduct themselves with courtesy, dignity, consideration for others and restraint at all times.  Loud speech, vulgar and abusive language, indecent gestures and physical confrontations and abuses are all unacceptable behaviour and will no be tolerated by the institution.  Any such irresponsible behaviour makes a student liable for suspension or expulsion from the programme.


Dormitory Rules

 

Responsibility for Rooms

It is responsibility of the students assigned to a particular room to maintain the decor and cleanliness of that room and all its access ways.

The student is also responsible for ensuring that the electrical outlets, switches and fixtures are not tampered with so that they are in the same condition as they were when the room was assigned.

The student is responsible and financially liable for all damages done to furniture, linens and other fixtures provided in the room. 


Collective Responsibility for Special Areas

All students are collectively responsible for furniture, articles and appliances assigned to the following areas.

  1. Laundry

  2. Cafeteria

  3. Lounge

  4. Classrooms

  5. Laboratories.

Students are warned not to remove any furniture from these areas without prior written approval.  Breach of this particular section of this regulation carries a cash penalty.

The student is personally responsible for all of his personal effects.  However, in the interest of safety, the Administration would hold in safe custody such important instruments and articles as currency, jewelry, passports and other articles of a similar nature.

Requests for upliftment of those articles must be discretional and, excluding cases of extreme emergency, at least a day’s notice is required to ensure no embarrassment or delay.


Use of Appliances

The student is strictly prohibited from using any iron, hot plate, electric kettle, percolator or such thermally oriented device paralysis would result from the use of any device exceeding 200 watts.  Students wishing to use such appliances must do so in the designated area. 

The student is also cautioned not to play any radio, tape-recorder or such video/audio equipment at any offensive decibel.

 


Cafeteria Rules

  1. Meals will be served only during the specified meal period, which are:

Breakfast 07:30 – 08:30 hours
Lunch 11:45 – 12:45 hours
Supper 17:30 – 18:45 hours
  1. The following are not allowed in the Cafeteria during mealtime:

  • Sleeveless shirts or vests
  • Field Wear, Games Wear, Rubber Boots, Hat/Caps 
  • Curlers, if they must be worn, must be completely covered with a head-tie or hat.
  • Students are required to queue in an orderly fashion for meals.
  1. Students are not permitted, at any time to go behind the serving counter of the cafeteria, unless the Cafeteria Supervisor invites them or someone authorized to do so.

  2. Students must not remove from the cafeteria, any furniture, fixtures, utensils or cutlery without permission.

  3. Students who plan to be off campus at any of the specified meal times, must make the necessary arrangements with the Cafeteria Supervisor or Student service Coordinator, before meal time, and authorize someone to collect the meal(s) on their behalf.  Only then can an authorized person take covered container to uplift meals for absent student(s).

Note:  A student’s failure to comply with the above rules may affect the  student’s access to meal service.


Entertainment of Guests

The student must notify all guests that on campus visiting hours are up to 10:00 PM

Visitors are not allowed in rooms occupied by students except with prior approval of the Student Services Coordinator.  Male students are not permitted to be in rooms occupied by female students and vice versa.

Students are encouraged to explore the possibility of having their personal possessions covered by Fire or Burglary Insurance. 

All students will be required to purchase Medical Insurance.  These insurance policies should be purchased before or at the time of registration when local insurance brokers will make relevant services available.

Students are advised that chairs, desks and other campus furniture are colour-coded for the purpose of inventory and security.  The removal by a student of any furniture from one location to another is a punishable offence.

Students are required to make a Cautionary Deposit of US$40 for any damage they may cause to furniture or property.  This sum is refundable upon the graduation of the student, subject to deductions (if any), for any damage identified as caused by that student.

Students found violating any of the above regulations or committing breaches of any rules of discipline will be penalized as decided on by the Disciplinary Committee which comprises the following:

  1. Student Services Coordinator

  2. Lecturer

  3. Finance & Administration Officer

  4. Student Representative.

Consistent violation of the Institution’s Regulations will result in a student being liable to expulsion from the Hall of Residence or withdrawal from the programme.
