Extension Services
The division is
staffed by Regional Rice Extension Officers (RREO) and District Rice
Extension Officers (DREO). The Regional
Officers supervise the District Officers in each region. The full complement of staff in
each region is one supervisor and two district Officers. However Regions 4 & 5 are
combined for administrative purposes.

The objectives of the division are as
follows.
- To increase yields and quality on a sustainable basis.
- To compare the characteristics of the different commercial
varieties.
- To transfer technologies developed by the Research
division that are appropriate economically and environmentally safe.

Target area seed growers are farmers living
in the rice growing regions who are selected to grow varieties on trial before they
are released. The following criteria are used for the selection of these
farmers. To be
selected the farmers must meet the following criteria.
- Honesty
- Literacy
- Must posess basic field equipment
- Owner of the land he cultivates
- Must be able to follow and carry out instructions and
advice

In order to effect technology transfer the
extension officers must carry out the following functions.
- Liason with research officers very closely.
- Sensitise farmers on existing problems by keeping seminars,
field days, arrange visits by research Scientists and other relevant personnel.
Trial Varieties
The following promising varieties are now on trial in all
rice growing areas.
These varieties are blast resistant and of rustic type.
